Summary: It is the preliminary bout of the Third Chuunin Exam and Lee has been watching a series of bouts. As it turns out, his teammate, Neji, is matched up against his cousin, Hyuuga Hinata. There is a long history of strife within the Hyuuga clan because of their bloodline limit - the Byakugan. Neji is probably the most talented ninja to come out of the clan in a generation, but he is a member of the branch family and seems to hold some resentment to Hinata. Up above, Lee is watching, along with Gai, Kakashi, Naruto, and Sakura. The two of them explain both the situation within the clan as well as the extent of the Hyuuga Clan's abilities, as well as how they differ from their own.
Down below, Neji and Hinata fight. It turns out to be exactly the mismatch everyone feared it would be. Neji easily overpowers Hinata and it's obvious to everyone that she's lost. Amid the fighting, though, Naruto yells out encouragement to Hinata that causes her to fight on. Her words and determination provoke Neji into a blind rage. He intends to land a killing blow, but the assembled Jounin from Konoha, sans Asuma, stop him. In the confusion, Naruto charges Neji with the intent to attack him there, but Lee stops him and tells him that the fighting should happen within the matches and the definitive match that will prove whether a failure can defeat a genius with enough hard work has yet to come. Lee concludes that it may be he that faces Neji, but he will not be upset if it is Naruto. Naruto responds by making a promise in blood that Neji is going down.
