So this is Lee's first major memory that's about himself, directly. Until now, he hasn't really had a starring role in any of his memories. Lee's always sort of been ancillary to other things - the fight against Kisame, Konoha being destroyed, Neji showing down Hinata - in the other memories and now he's finally at center stage.

This is one of Lee's most emotional moments in general - a cascade of various events have pushed him to the breaking point as he struggles to find some sense of worth. While the rest of his past is still obscured, this is the point where everything is just too much and he breaks because of it. But, luckily, the ultimate message for him here isn't self-doubt, but the fact that someone else has confidence in him. Gai's mannerisms makes it obvious how much he believes in Lee... although the extent of that is still largely unknown. For canon!Lee, this is a turning point where he stops allowing his self-doubt to overshadow everything and begins making serious headway. It's the beginning of his relationship with Gai, as well.

For Lee, while he's in Aather, he's had some self-doubts recently, although it's never been quite this bad. This is a touching memory, though, and it really makes him understand why he apparently is so close with Gai - just from this alone, he admires the man. It's a positive memory because it underscores his approach to everything: keep working hard, with faith in himself, and it will work out well, even here in Aather with all the amnesia and darkness and potential for hurt and death.
